Hi, it's Al & Rebecca
18 years ago we eloped and were married by a hippie/minister/massage therapist under a tree outside of a dentist office. It seems like we've been married forever. (#truth).
We've been through war (literally, we're both Army Veterans). We've been through natural disasters (once upon a time our house was destroyed by a tornado). We've been through multiple career changes (from dirtbag trail guide authors to suit-and-tie professionals and everything in between) and together we made it through a life-changing cancer diagnosis and treatment.
If you're like us, chances are that your life is stressful, messy and sometimes really challenging. But you may have someone by your side who has been there through the good, the bad and the ugly seasons of life.
When our friends at the Pacuare Outdoor Center invited us to visit Costa Rica recently it was the first time in 13-years (since before kids) that we were able to step away from our cell phones, our laptops, our responsibilities and just be. Be with each other. Be with nature. And be still. The experience was the best thing we've ever done for our marriage.
After our trip we knew that we wanted to offer the same experience for other middle-aged and gently graying humans.
That's why we're excited to offer Hike Like A Woman's first ever co-ed retreat. Bring your friend, spouse, partner, bestie, tinder flame, &/or soul mate and join us for a week of community, friendship, adventure, nature and reconnection.
Arrival & Travel to Turrialba (Turrialba Vista Guest House)
Upon arrival in San José, our guides (and Rebecca + Al) will greet you at the airport and whisk you away to the beautiful Turrialba Valley. Settle into the Turrialba Vista Guest House, surrounded by breathtaking views. Take this time to relax, unwind, and connect with your fellow adventurers. We'll enjoy a welcome dinner together with delicious food, fun, and laughter.
Coffee Tour -or- Horseback Riding and Canyoning (Turrialba Vista Guest House)
We'll start our day with an authentic Costa Rican breakfast before embarking on an exciting day. You'll get to choose your own adventure. And select either a captivating coffee tour, where you'll learn about Costa Rica's rich coffee-making traditions, or a horseback ride through the sugar cane fields and jungles followed by a thrilling canyoning experience, rappelling down magnificent waterfalls. In the evening we'll enjoy a cultural dinner in the charming Rural Village of Sitio de Mata. We'll head back to the Turrialba Vista Guest House for the night.
Rafting the Pacuare River (Rio Vista Lodge)
Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping day! We'll head out early to the Pacuare River, renowned as one of the most scenic rivers in the world. Brace yourself for an exhilarating white-water rafting experience as we navigate through dense rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and awe-inspiring canyons. Lunch will be a scenic riverside picnic (and by picnic we actually mean feast), allowing you to immerse yourself in nature's beauty. We'll spend the night at the Rio Vista Lodge, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the river.
Zipline & Tarzan Swing (Rio Vista Lodge)
Unleash your inner adventurer with a full day of excitement at the Rio Vista Lodge. Experience the legendary Tarzan Swing, soaring high above the river. If you prefer a milder thrill, we offer a lower platform option. Brace yourself for an incredible zipline adventure, providing a bird's-eye view of the Pacuare River. All of these adventure activities are optional and our guides are committed to your safety. For those seeking a more serene experience, join us on a nature hike to the majestic waterfall on the lodge's property.
Rafting Pacuare Canyon & Travel to La Fortuna (Los Lagos Resort)
Prepare for a day of breathtaking beauty as we raft through the spectacular Pacuare Canyon. We'll marvel at the towering canyon walls and witness cascading waterfalls that plunge into the river, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle. After a full day on the river, we'll head to La Fortuna, the home of the magnificent Turrialba Volcano. Our final two nights will be spent at the luxurious Los Lagos Resort, where you can relax and rejuvenate in the soothing hot springs.
Mistico Hanging Bridges & La Fortuna Waterfall (Los Lagos Resort)
After a restful night's sleep and a scrumptious breakfast, we'll hike through the mesmerizing Mistico Hanging Bridges above the lush canopy and enjoying in panoramic views of the surrounding nature. Next, we'll visit the enchanting La Fortuna Waterfall and explore the downtown area for souvenir shopping. We'll enjoy a free evening to unwind and soak in the hot springs.
On our final day, we'll drive you to the San Jose Airport, bidding you farewell with a deep appreciation for the beauty and "Pura Vida" spirit of Costa Rica. Leave with lifelong memories, new friends and a newfound understanding of this extraordinary country.
